Beneath the Palms: Luxury Island Hopping in the Maldives

Luxury Island Travel

Nestled like jewels in the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives beckon travellers with promises of unrivalled luxury, serenity, and natural beauty. Recently, I embarked on a 15-day island-hopping adventure through this tropical paradise, exploring the hidden gems of the Raa Atoll, Lhaviyani Atoll, Baa Atoll, Laamu Atoll and South Ari Atoll.

Encircled by a kaleidescope of blues and greens as far as the eye can see, each island offered a unique blend of breathtaking landscapes, world-class amenities, and unforgettable experiences reaffirming why the Maldives remains a dream destination for discerning travellers seeking the ultimate escape.

Heritance Aarah – Raa Atoll

My journey began at Heritance Aarah, a sanctuary of understated elegance nestled in the pristine Raa Atoll. From the moment I arrived, I was enveloped in a sense of tranquility.

The accommodation here is simple yet stylish, capturing the essence of Maldivian heritage, with an exclusive adults-only wing of Ocean Suites & Residences offering a secluded haven for those in search of ultimate relaxation and privacy.

What Heritance Aarah excels at is providing unparalleled culinary experiences, with its signature restaurant Ambula tantalising taste buds with gastronomical delights inspired by Sri Lankan heritage and Maldivian flavours. Dining on fresh seafood under the stars at Ginifati with toes buried in the powdery sand and the sound of waves serenading, was also an experience to cherish.

The Premium all-inclusive package establishes the ambiance for a relaxed getaway, encompassing dining experiences at six exceptional restaurants and three bars (with added perks for Ocean Suite & Residence Guests).

When not savouring fine food and chilled wine, there’s no better way to spend a cloudy afternoon in the Maldives than by diving beneath the sea to explore the house reef. The adventure extends into the evening with the awe-inspiring spectacle of a thunderstorm rolling in over the dark ocean, illuminating the night sky with spectacular flashes of lightning

An unsuspecting highlight of my visit here was the immersive Maldivian village experience, offering a fascinating glimpse into traditional island living, enriched with captivating storytelling, a historical photo journey, and culminating in a tasting of traditional Maldivian cuisine.

Six Senses Kanuhura – Lhaviyani Atoll:

Leaving behind the tranquil shores of Heritance Aarah, my journey led me to the enchanting Six Senses Kanuhura, nestled in the picturesque Lhaviyani Atoll. Six Senses Kanuhura encompasses three private islands and boasts a stunning expanse of beachfront adorned with an abundance of swaying palms, creating a tropical oasis that is breathtaking.

The beachfront villas at Six Senses Kanuhura are a testament to luxury and comfort, exuding a Hamptons homely feel that instantly puts guests at ease. Unlike traditional resort villas, these beachfront abodes feel more like private beach houses, inviting guests to linger and savour every moment of island living.

Newly added retreats add a touch of grandeur to the resort, with their Asian influences and expansive living spaces promising an unparalleled retreat in paradise.

Overwater Villas offer a private sanctuary suspended above the crystal-clear waters, offering panoramic views of the surrounding ocean, complete with private pool and a sun-kissed relaxation area with direct access to the sparkling waters via a ladder. Inside, the villas are thoughtfully designed with natural materials and contemporary furnishings, creating a harmonious blend of comfort and elegance.

But it’s not just the accommodations that steal the show—Six Senses Kanuhura’s culinary offerings are a gastronomic delight, with fresh and healthy fare that excites the senses. Embracing the ‘Eat With Six Senses’ global initiative, the resort focuses on healthy and sustainable eating, using fresh and locally sourced ingredients from their organic garden, local fishermen, and farmers. From exquisite Spanish tapas to authentic Italian cuisine, every meal is a journey of culinary discovery, combining flavours and aromas from both East and West to bring the most delicious dishes to your plate.

For those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation, the resort’s beautiful spa offers a sanctuary of pampering and wellness. From indulgent treatments to innovative biohacking modalities, including hot and cold plunge pools and steam rooms, guests are invited to embark on a journey of self-discovery and renewal. Fitness enthusiasts will feel right at home at Six Senses Kanuhura with an excellent fitness centre offering state-of-the-art equipment.

For a truly unforgettable experience, I can highly recommend a castaway experience on the private island of Jehunuhura, home to Drift, a beachside oasis offering a delightful selection of regionally inspired curries, salads, and seafood dishes bursting with freshness and perfect for savouring under the shade of a swaying palm tree amidst breathtaking surroundings.

During the day, the resort’s beautiful pool overlooking the beach becomes the perfect spot to unwind and savour the moment, but as evening approaches, guests head to the breathtaking Sunset Rooftop pool to admire panoramic sunset views and enjoy the resident DJ’s tunes while sipping on expertly crafted cocktails.

As I watched humpback whales pass through the horizon (a rare occurrence in the Maldives), I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of Six Senses Kanuhura—a resort that seamlessly blends luxury, serenity, holistic living and natural beauty to create an unforgettable island escape.

Six Senses Laamu – Laamu Atoll:

As my island-hopping adventure continued, I found myself stepping into a world of barefoot eco-luxury at Six Senses Laamu, located in the pristine Laamu Atoll of the Maldives.

Six Senses Laamu effortlessly blends rustic luxury with soulful sustainability, offering guests a Robinson Crusoe style sanctuary where their presence harmonises with the natural surroundings. Here, the impressive Sea Hub for Environmental Learning in Laamu (SHELL) serves as a beacon of education and inspiration, bridging the gap between science and leisure to foster a deeper connection with our oceans.

For marine enthusiasts like myself, Six Senses Laamu is a paradise beyond compare. With world-class surfing, scuba diving, and a vibrant house reef teeming with life, every moment spent immersed in the azure waters of the Indian Ocean is an adventure waiting to unfold. Whether it’s catching waves, exploring colourful coral gardens, or simply disconnecting and dreaming the day away at “Chill,” the resort’s idyllic overwater retreat, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

But the allure of Six Senses Laamu extends far beyond its aquatic wonders. With a Spa & Wellness program offering heavenly massages, and an abundance of adrenaline-fueled water sports, the resort caters to every desire and whim. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or adventure, Six Senses Laamu invites you to escape from civilisation and embrace the natural beauty of your surroundings.

At Six Senses Laamu, dining is a journey of inspiration, where chefs harness the bounty of the island’s organic garden and the daily catch from local fishermen to craft menus bursting with creativity and flavour. Whether indulging in Maldivian delicacies or savouring international classics, the array of restaurants offer endless variety, while the unique dining settings ensure unforgettable moments that linger in the memory for years to come.

LUX South Ari Atoll – South Ari Atoll:

Next stop I found myself immersed in the vibrant energy and playful vibe of LUX South Ari Atoll—a picturesque island sanctuary where simplicity, casual elegance and fun converge to create an unforgettable experience.

Here, amidst the swaying palm trees and crystal-clear waters, every corner offered an opportunity for adventure and relaxation.

Whether it was indulging in castaway island beach picnics, embarking on exhilarating water sports adventures, or exploring the vibrant marine life at nearby snorkelling sites, there was never a dull moment at LUX South Ari Atoll. For those seeking ultimate relaxation, the luxurious LUX Me Spa beckoned with promises of pampering and rejuvenation, offering a sanctuary of serenity amidst the island’s natural beauty.

Perhaps what sets LUX South Ari Atoll apart is its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. With its premier all-inclusive supplement LUX ensures that every guest can enjoy a memorable island getaway without the worry of additional costs. From sumptuous dining experiences to thrilling activities and entertainment, every aspect of the resort is designed to cater to everyone, ensuring that each moment spent here is nothing short of extraordinary. Moreover, LUX South Ari Atoll offers incredible value for money, allowing guests to indulge in luxury without breaking the bank.

In addition to its playful energy and inclusive offerings, LUX South Ari Atoll boasts stunning beaches and countless Insta-worthy opportunities, inviting guests to capture and share their unforgettable moments in paradise.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island – South Ari Atoll:

Located in the same atoll and just a brief speedboat ride away, my next island paradise was the beautiful Conrad Maldives Rangali where timeless elegance, tranquility, and natural charm blend seamlessly.

Known as the “island of firsts,” Conrad has continually pushed the boundaries of luxury hospitality, introducing the world’s first underwater restaurant and underwater residence, setting the standard for unforgettable experiences in paradise.

My home for the next few days was an exquisite Beachfront Villa Suite located on the family friendly Rangali Finolhu Island, the main hub of the resort. Connected by a picturesque 500-meter bridge  is Rangali Island, the couples-only retreat where couples can relish in the peace and exclusivity of a child free sanctuary.

The Beachfront Villa Suites architecture was a blend of Japanese influences interwoven with Maldivian charm. The thatching, sourced from local trees and meticulously crafted by local villagers, added a touch of authenticity and elegance to the villas, created a harmonious sanctuary that was difficult to immerse from, was it not for the breathtaking lagoon at my doorstep.

The resort itself features 151 beautifully designed villas, each offering a unique blend of comfort and luxury. However, the highlight is undoubtedly The Muraka, the world’s first undersea residence. This unique three-bedroom, two-level residence boasts a master bedroom submerged over 16 feet below sea level, providing an unparalleled underwater experience.

Dining at the resort was an absolute delight. With a selection of 12 restaurants and bars, I embarked on a culinary journey that satisfied every craving. From the specially crafted menus at the Mandhoo Spa Restaurant designed to nourish and energise, to the exquisite fine dining experience at Ithaa, the undersea restaurant, and the comforting flavours of traditional Italian cuisine at Vilu, each meal offers a gourmet experience. Adding to the culinary delights were the modern Cantonese creations at Ufaa by Jereme Leung, ensuring that every dining option was a culinary adventure.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island also offers guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture and natural beauty of the Maldives with Grand Maldivian night, where local ladies prepare traditional cuisine offering glimpses into the island’s vibrant heritage.

For families, the resort is equally impressive. The Majaa Explorer Hub kids club features a splash park providing endless fun for the little ones, while the teens club Furaavaru offers engaging activities for older kids.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island transcends the definition of a mere luxury resort—it’s an idyllic destination where every moment promises discovery and delight. Whether it’s savouring the signature Pina Colada poolside, luxuriating in pampering sessions at the serene Spa nestled overwater, or embarking on an unforgettable whale shark excursion guided by the delightful marine biologist, the opportunities for adventure and relaxation are boundless.

As the sun set over the azure waters of the Indian Ocean casting a golden glow over the island’s pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs, it was easy to see why Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is a favourite among discerning travellers seeking a truly extraordinary escape.

Patina Maldives Fari Islands – North Male Atoll:

After my delightful stay at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, my island-hopping adventure took me to my final destination, the stunning Patina Maldives Fari Islands. In the tapestry of Maldivian luxury, Patina emerges as a vibrant thread, weaving together sleek design, natural splendor and a vibrant social scene.

Nestled on a lush man-made island in the pristine waters of North Male Atoll, Patina celebrates the essence of tropical modernism. Designed by the acclaimed Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, the resort is a testament to the harmonious fusion of nature, artistry, and human connection.

Surrounded by a turquoise lagoon and verdant greenery, the 90 ultra-modern beachfront and overwater villas offer a sanctuary of style and sophistication. Additionally, 20 Fari Studios provide a chic and comfortable stay, perfect for immersing in the epitome of island chic.

Patina Maldives offers a diverse range of dining options, comprising 12 concepts from hearty Asian fare to international and Greek cuisine, with each meal presenting a delightful exploration of flavours emphasising sustainability and freshness. My dining experience at Brasa, the resort’s Patagonian steakhouse, was particularly memorable, and mouth-wateringly delicious. Adding a fun and contemporary twist to modern dining, Patina also features several food trucks serving world class burgers, Asian tapas, and delectable gelatos and ice creams.

Patina Maldives places a strong emphasis on well-being, offering a range of exceptional facilities. Among them is a unique watsu pool for passive aquatic therapy, along with high and low impact workout classes led by highly trained consultants. The wellness centre also offers curative and preventative remedies designed to achieve mental tranquility and restore balance. My personal highlight was the “Sensory Deprivation Experience” in a float tank filled with magnesium salts. This dreamy one-hour meditative session left me feeling incredibly calm and relaxed, reportedly delivering the equivalent benefits of three hours of sleep.

For families, Footprints—the children’s educational activity centre—keeps the youngest guests engaged and entertained with both indoor and outdoor activities. The resort also offers soccer camps in school holidays with an upcoming opportunity in July for young guests to join daily training sessions led by a Real Madrid Youth Training Coach. It’s no surprise that adults want to join too, however it’s currently reserved for children under 17.

An unsuspecting highlight was the Fari Marina Village, an open air communal lifestyle space with alluring boutiques and the resort’s trendy restaurants centred around a vibrant Beach Club. Accessible by boat and open to guests from other resorts, the village offers a vibrant social scene that perfectly complements the serene luxury of Patina.

At Patina Maldives, every moment is infused with style and sophistication. Whether lounging by the pool, sipping cocktails at the open-air bars, or enjoying the vibe at the Fari Beach Club, I felt completely immersed in the island’s undeniably hip and trendy atmosphere.

My journey through the Maldives was a testament to the diversity and allure of this island nation. Each resort, offered its own distinct charm and character aptly capturing  the cultural heritage influenced by various Indian Ocean cultures, including India, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East, reflected in their local traditions, music, dance and cuisine.

As a conscious traveller, what impressed me most was the genuine dedication to sustainable tourism practices showcased by many resorts. From innovative eco-friendly initiatives to robust conservation efforts aimed at preserving the delicate marine ecosystems, the commitment to safeguarding the Maldives’ pristine environment for future generations is commendable.

Upon reflection one truth became abundantly clear: the importance of having a knowledgeable and experienced travel advisor by your side. With first-hand experience exploring the Maldives’ finest resorts, comes an understanding of the nuances that set each property apart, allowing me to match clients with their perfect island retreat effortlessly.
