Luxury Travel Guide to Palau: Diving, Remote Islands & the Four Seasons Explorer
There are very few destinations left in the world that still feel
At first glance, Milos feels almost stark.
The landscape is rugged and sun-bleached, the roads dusty, the hills bare and windswept. It’s not lush, not manicured, and certainly not trying to impress – and yet, that’s precisely where its magic lies.
Beneath the raw exterior is an island of extraordinary beauty. Hidden coves carved into volcanic rock, water so clear it feels unreal, and villages that reveal themselves slowly – rewarding those willing to explore.
We visited in July 2024, basing ourselves in the seaside village of Pollonia, and quickly learned that Milos isn’t a destination you simply arrive at, it’s one you uncover.
It’s not glossy like Santorini, not buzzing like Mykonos, instead Milos sits confidently in its own lane – adventurous, understated and deeply charming. A place for travellers who enjoy wandering, discovering and letting a destination reveal itself in layers.
Staying in Pollonia, we fell into an easy rhythm of discovery: beach days that felt different every time, quiet villages, and evenings spent watching the light soften over the water.

Most importantly, Milos is made for exploring. While there is a local bus network that services the main towns and some beaches, the island really comes alive when you have your own wheels.
Many of Milos’ most beautiful beaches sit at the end of dirt tracks or remote coastal roads – especially on the eastern and western sides – so hiring a car or ATV gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. From our experience, having a car completely transformed the trip: spontaneous swims, sunset chasing, and discovering places we hadn’t planned to visit.
Milos does luxury well, not in an over‑the‑top way, but through space, views, privacy and atmosphere. These are the standout options for couples, honeymoons, anniversaries, or anyone wanting something special.
Pollonia & the Northeast Coast (My Favourite Base):-

With more than 75 beaches and coves, Milos offers extraordinary variety – no two beaches feel the same with each curve of coastline revealing something entirely different from the last.
At Sarakiniko, the island’s most iconic beach, sculpted white rock formations spill into luminous turquoise water, creating a lunar-like landscape that feels almost otherworldly. It’s best visited early in the morning or as the sun begins to dip, when the light softens and the crowds fade.

Further along the coast, Firiplaka Beach offers a more relaxed rhythm. Framed by colourful volcanic cliffs, it’s ideal for lingering afternoons — shallow water for swimming, sun loungers for slow hours, and beach bars that encourage you to stay just a little longer than planned.

For something more adventurous, Tsigrado Beach is an experience in itself. Reached via a narrow ladder and rope system, the descent feels like part of the discovery — and the reward below is well worth it: crystal-clear water, dramatic rock formations and a sense that you’ve uncovered something hidden.

Closer to Pollonia, the Papafragas sea caves invite exploration from the water. Swimming through natural rock arches as the light dances above is one of those moments that perfectly captures the spirit of Milos — wild, beautiful and quietly unforgettable.
And for days when you want ease and comfort, Paleochori and Agia Kyriaki deliver exactly that — organised beaches with excellent tavernas, calm swimming and the kind of atmosphere that effortlessly blends relaxation with indulgence.

A boat trip around Milos is essential. Departing from Adamas, tours reveal hidden caves, dramatic cliffs and beaches only accessible by water – with Kleftiko as the undeniable highlight. Swimming beneath its white rock formations is one of the most memorable experiences on the island

Beyond its coastline, Milos reveals its charm slowly through its villages — each with its own distinct personality.
The island’s capital, Plaka, sits high above the sea, its winding laneways lined with boutiques, cafés and whitewashed homes. Wandering here in the late afternoon, as the light turns golden, feels almost cinematic — and the views from the top stretch endlessly across the Aegean.

At sunset, many gravitate toward Klima, where colourful fishermen’s houses — the famous syrmata — sit directly at the water’s edge. As the sky deepens and reflections dance across the bay, it becomes one of the most photographed and quietly magical corners of the island.

Just along the coast, Mandrakia feels like a postcard come to life. Tiny and unassuming, it’s home to one of Milos’ most beloved tavernas, where lunch can easily turn into a long, lingering affair overlooking the sea.

And in Trypiti, life unfolds at a gentler pace. With traditional homes, local tavernas and close proximity to the island’s Catacombs and ancient theatre, it offers a glimpse into Milos’ deeper history — and a lovely contrast to the coast.
Dining in Milos is as much about setting as it is about flavour — tables perched above the sea, fishing boats bobbing gently below, and meals that stretch long past sunset.
In the tiny fishing village of Mandrakia, one restaurant stands out above all others. Medusa, perched above the colourful syrmata, is one of Milos’ most iconic dining spots. With a menu that changes daily depending on the catch and views that are nothing short of spectacular, it’s the kind of place where lunch easily becomes an afternoon affair.
Pollonia
Pollonia quickly became our favourite place to dine — relaxed, scenic and consistently excellent. Most evenings ended with a slow stroll along the waterfront, choosing a table as the light softened across the bay.
For seafood lovers, Akrotiri is a local favourite, known for its fresh catch and warm, welcoming atmosphere. Armenaki offers a more refined take on traditional Greek flavours, perfect for sharing meze as the sun sets over the harbour. Gialos, a classic seafront taverna, is ideal for simple, beautifully cooked fish just steps from the water.
For something a little different, Hanabi Sushi & Cocktails provides a stylish change from Greek cuisine — a surprisingly welcome option after days of beach hopping. And no visit to Pollonia is complete without a stop at Kivotos ton Gefseon, home to the island’s beloved watermelon pie — a local specialty not to be missed.

Plaka
High above the coast, dining in Plaka comes with some of the best views on the island. Astakas offers romantic terrace dining overlooking the bay — particularly special in the early evening as the sky begins to change colour.
Nearby, Utopia Café is a favourite for sunset drinks. Perched at the edge of the village, it’s one of the most atmospheric spots to watch the sun slip behind the horizon, cocktail in hand.
Adamas
In the lively port town of Adamas, food is generous, soulful and full of local flavour. O! Hamos! is a must — a much-loved institution serving authentic Greek cooking and regional specialties in a relaxed garden setting.
For mornings or casual evenings, Milors Café is ideal for breakfasts, light meals and sunset cocktails overlooking the harbour. And for something sweet, Aggeliki Ice Cream is a firm favourite — homemade flavours enjoyed while watching ferries glide in and out of port.
Milos isn’t about rushing from sight to sight, it’s about moments.
Morning swims in hidden coves. Long lunches that quietly stretch into sunset dinners. Unhurried village walks with salty hair and warm evening air. Staying in Pollonia allowed us to truly slow down and fall into the natural rhythm of the island — and it’s a place I would return to in a heartbeat.
If you’re dreaming of your own Milos escape, I would love to help bring it to life — from selecting the perfect luxury stay to curating an itinerary that balances beach days, exploring by boat and unforgettable dining experiences.
Milos is wonderfully versatile. Whether you are travelling as a couple, a family or planning a getaway with friends, the island adapts effortlessly — offering calm swimming beaches, beautiful villas, scenic boat days and a pace of travel that suits whoever you’re sharing the journey with.
If Milos has found its way onto your travel wish list, I would be delighted to help you experience it in a way that feels personal, seamless and truly memorable.
